Savant: Ascent by D·Pad Studio for the PC

Chip HagemanThis game was released a little while ago, but I just had the opportunity to spend some time with it and I wanted to post some impressions.  First off, here is the premise of the game taken right from the website.

A malicious orb has cast Savant out of his tower and transformed his surroundings into dangerous enemies!  Dodge and shoot your way back up the tower, and blast down waves of enemies as you make your way towards the top! As you progress, you unlock CDs that not only give you new tracks to play to, but also grant you powerful new abilities!  Can you make it to the top?

The game was inspired by the artwork and music centered around the Norwegian musical artist SAVANT (Aleksander Vinter).  D·Pad Studio has collaborated with him in the past and essentially decided to make a game that showcased SAVANTs music with their game design prowess.

The game itself basically plays out as a very clever mix of shoot’em-up and platformer.  You control the Savant with the W·A·S·D keys and fire using your mouse.  It takes a bit of getting used to, but overall works out quite well.  Action tends to get frantic rather quickly and you will spend a fair bit of time targeting and dodging incoming enemies that bombard you from all sides.

At a price point of $1.99, it’s certainly not going to break the bank.. and with the high production values of not only great graphics and sound, but also solid controls and gameplay-  I can’t recommend this game enough.  If you’re a fan of shoot’em-ups especially.. do yourself a favor and pick this game up.
